​Types of Crime:
Crimes are classified based on the severity.  Below is a short example of various types of charges and their degree. 
  • Infractions- These include but are not limited to speeding tickets, littering, minor assaults, truancy
  • Misdemeanor- Ranging from Possession of Marijuana, to Family and non Family Assault and Bodily Injury, as well as Driving While Intoxicated
  • State Jail Felonies- Abandonment of a child, Arson, Injury to a child, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, including Unauthorizsed use of a vehicle.
  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Degree Felonies- A charge more serious that the two mentioned above. Felonies range from Family Violence, Habitual DWI's, Burglary, to Stalking.
Examples of punishment
Class B Misdemeanors: Up to 180 days in Jail and a $2000.00 fine
Class A Misdemeanors: Up to 1 year in Jail and a $4,000.00 fine.
Class A Misdemeanor Family Violence: Up to 1 year in Jail, a $4,000.00 fine, a finding of family violence, and a prohibition from owning, using, or being in contact with firearms.
DWI 1 (Misd. B) : 0-180 days in Jail + $0-$2,000.00 fine (as of Sept. 1, 2019- The State may offer deferred adjudication probation on DWI cases)
DWI 2 or DWI 0.15 of higher (Misd. A): 0- 1 year in jail + $0 - $4,000.00 fine
State Jail Felony: 180 days - 2 years in State Jail + $0-$10,000.00 fine 
3rd Degree Felony: 2-10 years + $0-$10,000.00 fine
2nd Degree Felony: 2-20 years + $0-$10,000.00 fine
1st Degree Felony: 5-99 years + $0-$10,000.00 fine
